Fleischer Studios-style Superman
Sometimes when you finish a job—well, I do anyway—you get so enamored with an idea or style that you have to create something. This is the case with this Fleischer Studios-style Superman piece from 2021. I had no reason to do this, yet I had to. After I finished my work on the Cuphead: DLC game, I was still in love with exploring the inking approach developed by the artists at Studio MDHR. They were inspired by the look of the Fleischer Studios-style cartoons from the 1940s. The whole time, I kept playing the original Superman cartoons in the studio. They are still classics in my mind. I wondered if I applied the same working methods for inking with Copics to create that old-timey dip pen feel... could I create a classic-looking Superman? Here are the results of that experiment from several years ago. When I did this, I had a nice, fancy studio and created this on the same animation desk I did my Cuphead work on. Now I draw on a fold-out table in my living room. Oh, how life can change. Enjoy. -Dave B.
